Don't say "that's gay" when referring to something negative. "That's gay" is not equivalent to "gee wiz, that's terrible" or "duuuuude, that sucks!"
I am perfectly acceptant of the use of the phrase to refer to, say, a man wearing sweatpants with "JUICY" on the butt, or something of the like that can be genuinely associated with Gay culture, but not in a desparaging manner.
Saying "that's gay" to refer to negative occurrences in our lives is just perpetuating negative connotations surrounding the Gay community. Furthermore, it is brainwashing our children to hold the idea that being gay is somehow a respulsive thing. It's proven that it gets children thinking that, and ever-easily-influenced adolescents as well.
The phrase "that's gay" is just the latest development in a society that has been anti-gay for a while in its picture of the "ideal". America rarely holds its ideals, including the fact that the amount of people in straight, nuclear families amount to way less than half of America's citizens.
It's not about intention. If I don't intend to illegally park my car, does it get me out of being written up? No.
When I hear someone say "that's gay", it hurts me. It really bothers me. Some people will mention that their "gay friends" don't mind it. So what? It's much less about the relationship between "supportive" straights and their Gay friends, it's about the impact the phrase has on individual mindsets and our culture in general.
Would you understand if I used the phrase "that's sooooooo Christian" (or Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Mormon, etc.) or "that's soooo Italian" (or French, Chinese, Japanese, Iranian, Ethiopian)?
The phrase hurts me. It should hurt everyone. Its use merely gives anti-gay individuals more "justification". They don't need any more of that. I live in Phelps'-country, trust me.
Please don't use the phrase "that's gay" in an unconstructive and demoralizing way. Thank you.
